Yipee! Yay! She is becoming such a big girl now & outgrowing her green-ness! :D It will be strange correcting myself when talking about her age now. I am so used to telling people about my 4 year old mare. I took her to her first horse show ever last week at Brownland Farm. We went with Roxy's full brother, who is a year younger & also with another 4 year old named Syd. All 3 horses did amazingly well! We were all expecting to had fallen off the first time out! They handled the show like seasoned pros!

Roger said that I have been doing an amazing job with Roxy's training & she is progressing very quickly. I have put a lot of dressage training on her in the past few months. Her musculature is amazing now & she is very light & supple.

Pet Peeves- Part I

Since I have not started into my show season yet thanks to the monsoon we had the past few days, I thought I would post about something that really just grinds my gears! This is something that is so simple, yet most trainers are not teaching their students anymore. Ring etiquette!

- When you are going opposite directions from someone you should ALWAYS pass left shoulder to left shoulder. If you are unable to do this, then you should call out "inside" or "outside" to let the other riders know your intentions to avoid collisions!

- Don't crowd! You should leave AT LEAST one horse length between you & the horse in front of you to avoid getting kicked.

- Walk in the center of the ring, canter on the outside! If you walk or halt on the outside of the arena, you risk collisions.

- Longeing. You should always ask first if you can longe your horse in the arena...even if you have a calm horse. There are typically separate areas set aside where you are able to longe horses.

- Lessons will typically have the right of way in the arena. You can still ride, but listen to the lesson so that you will hear what they will be working on so that you can stay out of the way. Always be cautious around green riders, as they may have difficulties steering their horse. If someone is jumping, you can still ride around the outside, however it is a good idea to wait in a corner until they are through with that exercise.

- When you are jumping with a group in an arena, please make sure to call out your jumps. For example, "Heads up green!" "Heads up red oxer!" "Heads up outside line!" Call the jumps out before you start heading to them, and if jumping a line or course, call your next jump after you land the previous one. This will help to avoid collisions.

- If you are riding in an arena such as an indoor where people cannot see other riders coming in, it is a good idea to announce yourself. All you need to say is "Door" or "Coming in" or something along those lines.

- If you have a hot horse, a horse that kicks bites, etc... please let other riders around you know. Some people even tie a red ribbon on their horse's tail to warn people not to get too close to your horse.

That are all the main ones I can think of. Of course, there could be more, but as long as you learn these tips you will make everyone's experience around you much more pleasant!

New Pics!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 305px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IuRe8Fnnfd4/Sb3F_GH0TjI/AAAAAAAAAL4/DklbJVcBHOM/s400/Library+-+437.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313620823132884530" />

She loves it when I scratch her behind her ears! She is doing amazingly well, and is so far along in her training! She learns extremely fast & takes very little correction. She does respond better to people with a confident & take-charge attitude. She seems to really take advantage of people with any sort of hesitation or who are a bit tentative. Most young horses are like that though. I have several friends who have young horses the same age Roxy, but she seems to be further along with her training.

We were supposed to go to our first schooling show this past weekend, but we had so much rain the past week that the arenas were flooded. I did not want Roxy's first experience to be a bad one, so I opted to wait until the next show. I will be starting her in the hunter classes (ugh) so I can teach her to jump with a nice & relaxed style. I will move her into the jumper classes, and I am hoping to get her into the Young Jumpers by the time she is 6. I would like to be jumping the Level 3's with her by the end of the year. I am also going to be taking her to some dressage shows.

If you have been wondering why I have not been posting much on this blog, it is because I have been unable to ride, so I really don't have much to say as far as training goes. We have had such a wet winter, and the ground here just continues to be saturated, so I am just looking forward to a day when I can ride! I have pretty much give up hope on that anytime soon!

Roxy is such a good girl though! She is becoming quite the ham...just like my other horses! She absolutely loves the attention, and she will come up to people to have her head rubbed. She also loves it when I hug her head. I just wrap my arms over her head, and she is in heaven! She was not like this a few months ago. She is really getting quite the personality! She is definately a little girly-girl though!

I haven't been able to do any riding at all because we have been having some really gross & wet weather lately. It has been raining here for a couple of weeks, and last week we got at least a good 3 inches of snow. The snow was pretty when it fell, but it sure made a huge mess! I have pretty much given up all hope of riding a horse at least until after the New Year. The ground is just way too saturated & I don't want a horse to slip & hurt theirselves.

I was riding Dezi a couple of weeks ago working on some tempi changes, and he had a pretty bad slip and the ground was not all that wet. We just hit a bad spot. Roxy had been doing so well for me, so I am really anxious to get her back going again. I am hoping that she will retain everything that I have taught her.

Anyway....enjoy some pictures of horses in the snow.

<img style="display:block; Well....better being the operative word here! I don't feel normal...well....normal for me I guess, but it is still a struggle for me to even ride. Anyway...

Roxy has been a really good girl! She is coming right along & developing & growing beautifully! I am working her about 5 days per week now. I hauled her & Sunshine over to Roger's today so that I could see what he is thinking of her progress & to get jumped, since I have no jumps here at the house.

Roger is extremely happy with Roxy's progress, and he can't believe how much she has grown. Her weight is great, and she has gotten a lot taller! She was such a good girl today. She hasn't been jumped in about 2 months I guess. She ended up doing a 3'9" oxer at a 4' spread. She did it without even blinking an eye!

Today....

I am still trying to take it easy on my body, since I am still pretty weak. I have no one who can help me out with these horses. Anyone can ride Sunshine, but I need to work with Dezi & Roxy a few times a week. Ugh! I got on Roxy. Hoping that she wouldn't do her bucking bronco fit today. She was a pretty good. Nothing too bad, and she never tried to bolt.

Roxy is a crazy girl though. I was riding her through some tall weeds, and instead of just tromping through the weeds she kept on jumping them. She was doing bounces....and actually a really good job at it. It was pretty funny though!

I set up some trot poles for her to go over to help train her eye. She did marvelous with those. She is so incredibly smart! She thought that she was supposed to jump over those poles at first. She thought she was being such a good girl! I had set them up as 2 trot strides or 1 canter stride....to help with more impulsion & engagement. Once she got the hang of it, the exercises really seemed to help. She was so proud of herself!

Today.

Farrier Visit

My farrier came out to shoe the horses today. His name is William Von Erps. He is a French farrier via Los Angeles. It took me a long time to find him, and I hope to hang onto him forever! Finding & maintaining a good relationship with a farrier is very important. I have always preferred European farriers because their training is so stringent. If anyone wants his contact info, please let me know. He is definately not cheap, but he is well worth it!

This was Roxy's 2nd pair of shoes now. She had her very first set put on in late August shortly after I bought her. I have him do a hot shod on my horse's feet. She actually had no problems getting used to the smoke or anything else. She has very good & strong feet & excellent horn quality.

<img style="display:block; why I have not updated this blog, it is because I am still sick! Ugh! So...I had a virus & then ended up with Walking Pneumonia. When I was just starting to feel a little better from that, I realized that I had a Kidney Infection. Of course, being sick for about a month & a half now has really taken it's toll on my body. It has really made my Fibromyalgia flare up very bad, and I am just incredibly weak & have no energy. I have been unable to do much of anything at all, let alone ride.

I've been doing some lunging & groundwork with my horses, and I rode Dezi & Roxy on Sunday for the first time in awhile. They were so freaking crazy! They both bucked me. I had to keep pulling Dezi's head up....he had so much energy! Roxy was a bucking bronco & kept bucking me for about 5 minutes. All she wanted to do at first was canter. So...I stayed very cool & level-headed the whole time & they both ended up doing fine, but boy was I worn out & sore! I just wish my roommate had been outside with me to videotape the whole ordeal, but she was inside the house watching the Packers game. The video would have been so entertaining!

Videos

These are some of the videos from August 30th that I had been wanting to post. I hate the fact that I am not able to ride right now. If I were to sit on a horse right now, I would fall off sideways! My depth perception is off & I keep running into things. It's craziness!

Roxy was being such a good girl, and her ground manners are getting to be so good. She now offers me her feet by just me standing by the foot I want. She picks them up for me. What a good girl! She is very sensitive when you touch her....especially around her flank & hind end. It is hard to use a hard brush on her. She used to throw a cow kick at you when you touched her back end...especially on her left side. She does not do that anymore....at least with me. No one else has really been around her much lately except Libby for a few times. I can stand behind her & brush out her tail. I pulled her mane & it looks great! She was very good for that. I like to keep their manes very short...about a hand's width. It looks so neat & tidy like that.

Anyway....so I was lunging Miss Roxy. She was a little spunky. I have some weeds, and for some reason she was jumping the weeds like they were jumps. That was very strange....and funny! She cracks me up! I got her settled down, and she did a nice workout for me. However, I had a bad Vertigo attack while I was lunging her & I blacked out for a second. Roxy was cantering. The lunge line wrapped around my left leg very tight & I had fallen down. I am SO GLAD that I have been teaching Roxy voice commands. You better believe that she knows "Whoa" now! I told her to "Whoa" & she slammed on the brakes & turned in towards me. What a good girl!

That is crazy though. I could have easily been drug & broken my leg or trampled. Who knows. So, I guess now I can't even lunge my horses right now incase it happens again. I am even having trouble driving. It is so frustrating. So...I guess I'll just be grooming the horses & doing things like that for awhile. If I had know I would be sick for over a month, I would have left my horses at Roger's so they could be ridden. Sigh!

For Your Listening Pleasure....

I added a little widget at the bottom of this blog with some of my kind of country music for you to enjoy while you read about my Roxy Gurl!

Anyway...it has been a few days since I have posted an update. I thought I was getting over my virus, but apparently I am not....I am still pretty sick! I have no energy left at all. This virus has really just drained me, and I still cannot see!

I have been riding & doing ground work with Roxy (and my other horses) but I have not really been pushing it too hard since I just am not feeling so well. Roxy has been doing amazingly well! She is so laid-back & is adjusting great to life here at Flying Changes Farm! I walked out my back door one morning to find all 4 of my horses (well....maybe you could say 3.5 horses since one is a mini) in one of the stalls together just hanging out! I wish I had my camera with me. It was so insanely funny & cute!

Roxy has been coming along great with her training. She is really developing her muscles & has a lot of impulsion now. She is such a pleasure to work with. She just really wants to please, and she tries so hard! She still likes to do her nervous little jog for the first few minutes, and when you first put her into a canter she will buck a few times. She's not bucking to try to unseat you though...it just feels like she is trying to balance herself. She is growing like a weed!

I am so happy with Roxy, and she is turning into quite the ham!

Roxy the Rock Star!

I gave my horses the day off on Sunday. I typically do that when I can. Sometimes I alternate from Sunday to Wednesday. Anyway...I rode Roxy & Dexi yesterday. And once again Roxy got away from me when I was trying to bridle her & ran over to Dezi. It only took me 5 minutes to catch her this time. I was so nervous about her running away though because the martingale was around her neck & just hanging down.

Roxy was a little spooky when I first got on. She did her little nervous jog for a few minutes. She tried to buck & bolt, but I was able to keep her from doing this. We worked a lot on relaxation and streching down & around onto the bit. She is a good girl & just wants to please. She ended up doing very well yesterday. Her gaits & movement are amazing. I love sitting her trot...it's so easy. Of course, any trot is easier to sit than Dezi's! When I sit his trot & even his canter, I feel like I'm on a pogo stick!

A Few Pics to Enjoy!

I don't know if I will ever be sick again, or at least if I'm sick, I still need to ride my horses! Miss Roxy apparently had too much time off, so we was a bucking bronco last week for both Libby & I. That is so unlike her. I guess she just really needed her exercise! That's another thing about the greenies is they will be different from day to day. So, when I am sick or out of town, I will have Libby Smallbone of Equi-Cise come & work my horses for me. I am teaching her voice commands from the lunge work. Somehow she thinks that "Good Girl" means to slam on the breaks & stop! Our first lunge session very very rough, but now after doing the 3rd lunge set, she did amazingly well. She is such a fast learner. I teach her cluck to trot & I also say "trot", kiss for canter & I also say "canter" to slow her down I saw "easy"in a lower pitch authoritative voice. Roxy is a Rock Star! She was so proud of herself, and I gave her lots of love & some treats. She wanted to nuzzle all over me.

I want to try to ride tomorrow, but I am actually still feeling pretty under the weather. There is nothing I can do about it though. I am just tired of feeling weak & puny.

I'm Back!

I had an awful virus for two weeks & I am just now beginning to feel better from it! I was SO sick! I still feel very weak & run-down....my eyesight is still blurry. Hopefully I will feel better soon!

I had Libby Smallbone of Equi-cise come out before she left on vacation to ride my two crazies for me since I was so sick! She did a good job with each of them that I could see. I was pretty sick & don't remember much!

I rode Monday & today. I expected Roxy to be a bit of a nut, but for the most part she wasn't. She was just trying to see what she could get away with. I finally got her to calm down after about 30 minutes. I had a set of draw reins on her, and that helped a lot. She needed a lot of bending & suppling.

I was all set to ride Miss Roxy today. Her saddle was on & all that was lacking was the bridle. Before I could get the bridle on, she broke loose from the cross-ties & ran away to the fence that Dezi was in. I ran after her yelling at her. She ran around & bucked for a good 2o minutes until I could get her. I decided after that stunt that we would do a ton of lunging. I lunged her for a whole freaking hour. She had never really been lunged before really, so I had to teach her. She was so wet & worn out! She ended up being a good girl after that! She just wanted to see what she could get away with since she is still a baby. I guess I kind of had a Dumb Blood today! ;)

I hosed her down after her work out & gave her some treats & some lovin! She deserved it...she worked hard for me! Haha....sometimes don't ya just love working with the greenies? I wonder what she'll be like tomorrow. Dezi was an absolute ANGEL when I rode him today!

P.S. Check out a new blog listed on the side. It's called: "Training Chico- Roxy's Full Brother"

Libby Smallbone of Equi-cise is working with him. Hot Shot is an Arabian that I got as a "free to a good home" type of thing. He came from an avid endurance racer & ended up with a suspensory injury. I brought him to my place & rehabbed him for a year until I could ride him. I started doing dressage, low jumping (about 2'9") & trail riding with him. He is such a good boy....and so sweet! He totally changed my mind about Arabians!

What a pretty boy!

Weee!!! I have pondered the idea for many months. Once I bought Roxy, I decided that's what I should do. They love Hot Shot so much! A transport service from Texas came to pick him up today. I tried so hard not to cry! I started crying as I was walking him down our long driveway. All my other horses came running to the fenceline.

I'm really sad....but also happy at the same time. I have had him for 4 years now. He is a sweet boy. He took a long time to warm up to me, but he finally did. He is going to an amazing farm in Texas to live out the rest of his life & go on long trails rides! I will miss him terribly, but I know he will be loved & cared for! I'm gonna miss you buddy!

A Few Pics from Yesterday...

Roger rode Roxy yesterday before I brought her home. I am so excited! I think that bringing her back home will finally make it sink in that he is really mine! I have a bunch of things to do here before she gets here. My 3 horses that are here now have broken a few fence boards & I need to replace them today. I also need to strip all my stalls & tighten the high tensile fencing in the very back. I'm trying to think of everything because 4 year olds are very curious & can get theirselves into trouble!

I've been up since 5:30 this morning working out here. Now I have to go work for a few hours & then go out to my trainer's barn. I am going to ride Dezi on the flat & then school Roxy over some jumps. We shall see how that goes. Maybe I will be able to get some pictures. I am not promising anything though! I'll be working about 10 hours today around getting all my horse stuff done! It will be an exhausting day!

I rode Roxy this morning. She was feeling great! She is getting a lot more sensitized to my leg cues. I started working with her on that. I like my horses to be very very light & responsive to all of my cues....almost electric. She is getting much better. It used to be very tough to get much response at all when you put your leg on. She is progressing in that aspect.

She still spooked down the one side of the arena for quite awhile today. I swear that there must be a Saber-Toothed Tiger living in those trees! So....I made her walk up & down that side for about 10 minutes. I worked her on true bending & counter bending exercises. We even are starting to be able to work on shoulder & haunches in now. She is developing so fast!

Once she relaxed I worked her in a posting trot in various figures. Still working on her inside shoulder & her neck flexion. She is finally getting it. She still wants to drop her shoulder in & turn like an ironing board at times, but we are having progress. She was very calm & forward today.

I picked up a canter fairly easily in both directions. Her canter stride was nice & huge today. I was able to collect her up some & bring her up into my body more. She felt like a carousel horse. I am so happy with her development. She has such a great work ethic. She really wanted to keep on cantering today!

After that I worked her down to a slow sitting trot. We worked on spiral in, spiral out, and leg-yielding. She did pretty well, but seemed more stiff to the right this time. She is typically more stiff on her left. I always make sure to work her difficult side first & then her easier side. I also make sure that I try to spend equal amounts on both sides.

Roger is very happy with my work with her. I think that we will jump her a little bit tomorrow. After that, I will be getting Roxy & Dezi ready to come back to my farm!

Thanks for reading! Please leave some comments!

Yesterday I worked with Roxy on walk & trot exercises. She is still developing the muscles for her head carriage, but she has been so great about putting her head down & using her hind end for more propulsion. I have not really been sitting down on her back in the saddle. I am waiting for her back to get stronger before I work her from behind too hard. I am just trying to develop the flexion & the muscle.

She was spooking down the long side of the arena where all the trees are. I guess she thinks that a tiger will jump out & eat her. I made her go down that side until she trotted with her head down & didn't even eyeball it.

After I warmed her up, I realized what we needed to work on today. Shoulder control. She was dropping her inside shoulder pretty bad & did not want to go into the corners. I did a lot of counter-bending exercises at the walk & trot. I did the counter-bending in a Figure 8. She worked very hard during that exercise.

We had a pretty long session yesterday just because I was waiting for us to end on a positive note. I never finish a ride on a bad note. I don't want the horse's mind to be effected by ending on a bad experience or before we have completed something.

Roxy was much better today when I rode her. She was picking up her shoulder & moving it nicely. She was nice, soft, & forward. She was really using her back. I had her doing beautiful leg-yields. She seems to have such a natural talent for jumping, and now it even seems dressage. I wish I had some pictures from my ride today. It is hard to get pictures of me riding since I am the only usually taking the pictures.

I did some canter work with Roxy today also. She felt great at the canter. She has such a nice & smooth stride. I was able to start collecting her up some in the canter. Her center of balance changed. She felt amazing & Roger said that she looked GREAT!

Decisions

I have decided that I want to bring Roxy back to my farm when the month is over. I had toyed with the idea of keeping her at my trainer's barn, but I really want to keep her at my own farm. I don't have an arena with nice footing, and I do love spending time riding with Roger & Libby. I love galloping up the insanely steep hills with them & even chasing the cows, but I have a very nice little setup at my farm.

I have a few great places to do dressage. I have no footing though, it is just grass. I love taking care of my own horses though, and I just love having them right outside my door. I am such a control freak & over-bearing horse mom, so I would really have it no other way. I know that I probably drive my trainer crazy.

I have been working on training Roxy to my trailer. She learned to go into Roger's trailer. It took us about 30 minutes. My trailer is much tighter & it is just a straight load. It is also black. I got her in, but she likes to shoot backwards like a bullet. I think that I will feed her in there & let her relax a bit to get used to my trailer. I have a few more days to work on this.

My 2nd ride

My mare's name is Heart's Dazzle. Her old owner used "Bunny" as a barn name. No one ever liked that name. My trainer started calling her "Beezy." While that name sounded very cute, I did not want people to think that I named her after Beezie Madden. After some long thought, I was in my car & the song "Roxanne" came on! I love that song, and I can't ever get it out of my head! That is how I came up with the name Roxy. It's cute. It's different. I think that it suits her. What do you think?

My second ride was amazing. She was soft & supple. She was very responsive to me leg. We did some awesome leg yields & I did some canter work with her. I worked on opening & closing her canter stride. I was just collecting her slowly into my body. She tried so hard for me & did a great job. She has a great work ethic & attitude.

If our sessions keep going this well, then we will be ready to go in no time! I am taking our work nice & slow though. I want her to have a good & solid dressage foundation. Then we will go back & fine-tune her jumping.

Proud New Owner

I am a proud new owner of a beautiful 4 year old pinto Rhinelander mare. She is absolutely stunning. She is out of State of the Art, & Art Deco is her grandsire. I am still in awe that I have this horse. I have always dreamed of owning a pinto Warmblood. She is about 16.3 hands. She is very tall & leggy. My buckskin is such a big boy & takes up a ton of my leg, so she feels a lot different to me. It is harder for me to get my leg around her.

She is so laid-back & just really wants to please. She can be stubborn, but I credit that more to just being a mare. She has turned into a very loveable girl. I rode her before I bought her many times, so it still has not totally sunk in that she is actually "mine" yet. I love working with young & green horses, and she has been such a pleasure to ride. I am very excited as to what will come for us. She could very well be the horse to take me as far as I want to go! We have a lot of work to do!

A lovely little working trot. Notice my "trainer" position! That is such a bad habit. My Fibromyalgia has also made my shoulders slump...I am working on that in my physical therapy though! Oh...and those lovely marks on her rump are "love bites" from my jumper Dezi. He is quite a pistol!

Strrrreeeeettttccchhhh!

What a good girl!!!

Hugs!!!!
